Corinthians announces the return of head coach Fábio Carille for the beginning of the 2019 season.
Meet Fábio Luiz Carille de Araújo, commonly known as Fábio Carille. Born in São Paulo, a former footballer, assistant manager, and now head coach of giants of Brazil, Corinthians Paulista.
After nine professional years at the club as an assistant, Carille in the year of 2017 was put in charge as the new head coach of the Fiel. During that year, many believed Corinthians was crazy to put someone without any experience in power, especially after losing chairman Tite to the Brazil National team. The press considered Corinthians the “fourth power” of the state, being behind rivals Palmeiras, Santos FC, and São Paulo FC.
On his first year as head coach, Carille won with Corinthians one state championship (Campeonato Paulista of 2017) and the Brazilian league (Campeonato Brasileiro of 2017) with a record first leg of the tournament. By the end of the season, Carille was crowned Manager of the Year, while having four other players in the Team of the Year: right back Fagner, center back Balbuena, left back Guilherme Arana, and center striker, top scorer of the league, Jô.
The following year in 2018, Carille once again won the state championship during the first semester. The victory came after goalkeeper Cássio blocked two penalties against Palmeiras. During the finals, Palmeiras had beaten Corinthians 1x0 in Arena Corinthians, and in the second leg, Corinthians triumphs 1x0 over Palmeiras making the derby final go to a penalty shootout. This was accomplished after many players had transferred away to other teams such as Jô going to Japan, Arana to Sevilla in Spain, Pablo to Bordeaux in France, among many others.
During the second semester of 2018, Al-Wehda of Saudi Arabia offered Carille a promising career move. Together with his professional staff, Carille decided to move from Corinthians to the football of Saudi Arabia mid 2018 season.
Throughout the second semester, Corinthians have tried two different managers: Osmar Loss and Jair Ventura. With an astonishing 33% of success in the club, Corinthians have let both of them go, finishing the table in 13th after winning the previous year. In this year’s edition of the Campeonato Brasileiro, Corinthians conquered 44 points in 38 games, the worse record of the club in the past 10 years.
Without a doubt Corinthians’ biggest accomplishment for the following 2019 season is bringing back their victorious manager. In Saudi Arabia, Carille is placed fourth with Al-Wehda. In six months of work and 11 matches played, he has accumulated 6 victories, 3 ties, and 2 losses. President of the club Andres Sanchez is currently negotiating with Carille and Al-Wehda to pay a fee of $750,000.00 dollars and break the contract between the two allowing Corinthians to officially announce the return of their head coach. Arguably a horrible transaction for the club as Carille was only gone for seven months and now Corinthians will need to pay to bring him back. Many in the football world say all this could have been avoided if Corinthians simply cherished their manager and or possibly give Carille a raise at the time, but bola pra frente, life moves only forward, we live and we learn, so let’s go out there and make a stronger and better return.
